The term, “alternative medicine,” encompasses a large and varied collection of medical theories, practices and products, all of which are purported to do for patients and consumers what conventional medicine can’t or doesn’t do. Dr. Willis will identify and discuss some of the realities, myths and promotional claims for several popular modes of alternative medicine, including acupuncture, chiropractic and herbal therapy. The aim of his presentation is to enable listeners to make their own informed decisions and judgments about “alternative” medical products and services.
Dr. Willis’ interest in alternative medicine began in the late 1980s when he was writing weekly columns on alternative medicine, herbal remedies and over-the-counter drugs for The San Francisco Chronicle and The Indianapolis News. He holds a B.S. degree in pharmacy from Oregon State University (1966) and a Ph.D. degree in pharmacology from the University of Iowa (1970). In 1973, after a period of additional research training at the Mayo Clinic, he joined the faculty of the Indiana University School of Medicine where he taught pharmacology and conducted basic research until his retirement in 2006.
Dr. Willis taught basic pharmacology to medical and graduate students for more than 30 years, and received numerous awards for his teaching. He introduced the subjects of alternative and herbal medicine into the course curriculum in the early 1990s when public interest in these subjects had begun to grow. His lectures on alternative medicine to students, health professionals and consumers alike contrast the current state of knowledge and laws dealing with alternative medicine with the knowledge and laws having to do with conventional medicine. His “bottom-line” message is that both consumers and health professionals should take nothing for granted where health-related information is concerned, and especially where alternative medicine is concerned.
The focus of Dr. Willis’ research career was on the study of kidney function in health and disease. In the 15 years prior to his retirement he and a team of colleagues identified and studied the adverse effects of new treatments for kidney stones, such as shock wave lithotripsy, on kidney structure and function, subsequently discovering and characterizing the means by which those adverse effects could be minimized and prevented.
Dr. Willis is not a native Hoosier, but he believes that he has at least earned “honorary” status as a Hoosier after serving 12 years “in the trenches” as a licensed basketball referee.
