Longtime pro-brewer Jerry Sutherlin opens Round Town Brewery downtown Indy

20161020_171228The day is finally near.   Round Town Brewery is open  Friday, 4-10pm Saturday 12-10pm this weekend, Sunday 12-8pm (until an early home Colt’s game).  Then Wed, Thur. 4-8.  Brewer/owner Jerry Sutherlin is one of the most experienced brewers in Indiana, and truly wants to brew beer that people of Indianapolis love.   Sutherlin has been brewing for over 20 years in Central Indiana cutting his teeth at Oaken Barrel, Greenwood for over ten years, brewing at the Ram with veteran Dave Colt (now an owner at Sun King), and for the last ten years at Rock Bottom Brewery downtown.   At Round Town, so far in the sneak peak trail openings (announced via Facebook),  the beer ratings shown on the Untapped app show solid appreciation for all of the beers. When beers were tapped at Melody Inn on College, they blew the first keg in about three hours!  Other partners are Max Schenk and Eric Fear, both of beer experience.

Jerry told me in a recent interview he’d be very proud if people of Indianapolis think of Round Town Lager as their  Indy beer.  He says while he may sometime brew what he calls “big crazy stuff” he adds, “That’s not necessarily my style as a brewer.”  There is plenty of room in their building for barrel aging or even souring, but for now Jerry wants to concentrate on easy drinking beer people can love.

20161020_171615For the Grand Opening on  Thursday this was the beer list:

the Happy Face Pale which has a solid following already based on its slightly hop assertive recipe that is not too bold.

the Irish Coffee Red brewed with Limelight craft roasted coffee.  This beer has a direct connection to another award winning Indianapolis brewer, Liz Laughlin.  Laughlin left Rock Bottom Brewery College Park on Indy’s north side to follow another dream.   Liz lived in Oregon learning to love good beer and good coffee. Liz now owns Limelight Coffee, a craft coffee roaster here in Indy, the coffee used in this beer.

O’Rielly’s Irish Red,  is a malty red with featuring caramel and toffee, also on tap at O’Reilly’s Irish Pubs, Indy.

20161020_185240Round Town Lager, a malt-forward easy-drinking lager beer.   Just walk in and ask for the Lager!

Strong Monk Belgian Amber, brewed with the Belgian Ardennes (think Chouffe) for a nice spice note!

and  Southside Wheat, a hoppy wheat is likely on its way  for the opening.

Round town is about three minutes from Downtown Indy.  Be sure to put the correct address in your GPS: 950 S. White River Parkway West Dr.Lower Level on the West Side!

From Downtown take Kentucky Av, to Drover Street (at the Fire Station) and head back north a block on White River Parkway West Drive. You actually turn on Ray Street and park in the West parking lot!

From I-70 exit Harding Street, head south to Morris, angle left at Kentucky Av, and left on Drover (which is White River Parkway West Drive)

The neighbors popped in the very first day I was there (one of the first they had the doors open) and the Neighborhood Association leaders, the Napolean family, love having a brewery in the Valley neighborhood!

pictures soon!
