Tailspin, Louisville, one of USA Today’s Top Ten Beer Fests, Sat. Feb. 17

One of the TOP TEN  beer fests in the U.S. as voted in USA today, Tailspin Alefest, Louisville,  is certainly a regional favorite for great location, great space, friendly breweries, and a lot of fun!  I count  eight Indiana Breweries participating among over 80 total breweries and cideries. Yet, have YOU had beer from Nowhere in Particular, the itinerant brewer who will be serving up a Kettle sour and a passionfruit Saison? Or how about Evil Twin I Love You My Stout? Maybe you’ve not had Off Color Brewing, Chicago’s, Sibling Rivalry Tripel or Growl quad. This great fest is a little more than an hour-and-a-half south of Greenwood, IN. just minutes across the Ohio River Bridge from Louisville (see directions and ticket information at the end of this article).  Located in an historic airport hangar this has been one of my favorites  since starting in 2014 with back then about a dozen breweries from Kentucky and 30 total  Now it features nearly 80 breweries total with 22 from Kentucky alone!

Sure Sun King, Upland with Rum Barrel One Eyed Porter, Flat 12 with Moustache Ride Red and Pinko Imperial Stout, Daredevil with BBL aged JWP stout – OMG good!, Central State with Sunk Cost Sour Red, 3 Floyds with Crack the Skye Coffee stout, 450 North and Gnarly Grove Cider, and Tin Man with Csar & BBL aged Csar – one of my favs,  will all be there just to mention a few beers from north of the Ohio River.  Also, you’ll find  Rhinegeist of Cincinnati with Barrel Aged Ink (I love this stout), Four String of Columbus with a pale and two IPAs, Moerlein of Cincinnati with Shiver Chai Porter, Mt. Carmel of Cincy with Sap Attack Maple Brown and Rivertown Tequilana Agave Cider as well as beers  all of Ohio.

Still one of my favorite things is reuniting with Kentucky brewers. For the firth anniversary Tailspin in 2018 the KY breweries will be center stage . Here’s what I wrote back at Tailfest 2016!  “The best part of the Tailspin festival was the fact that all Kentucky breweries were together against one wall making it easy to “go local.  One of the first brewers and breweries I encountered was small Cumberland Brewing (Louisville) which had a nice seasonal winter warmer on tap along with regular pours Matt’s Red and the IPA.  I saw DH owner/brewer of  Country Boy brewing (Lexington, KY,).  I love Shotgun Wedding big bad brown ale, and they lured me (again) to the Sexual Dracula (really, that is the name) imperial stout that is so full of flavor you’ll want to slap your mama. Maybe they’ll have their Key Lime Gose that I turned relatives onto this year!  Against the Grain (Louisville) may be the most international of the breweries at Tailspin even though Louisville locals may not realize that beer from ATG ends up in Denmark and other European locations as well as Chicago and New York.  Sam Cruz as one of the owners is a Hoosier, both from and living in Indiana, and a mastermind along with partners Jerry,  Adam, and Andrew.   Since opening ATG in 2011 (a big year in KY) they may have concocted more wacky and wonderful beers than anywhere in the Bluegrass state.

This year have you had beer from?  Great Flood, Holsopple, Mash Cult, Mile Wide, Monnik, Paducah Beer Werks, White Squirrel, Wooden Cask, Goodwood, Dry Ground, Brew Stallion, Braxton, Apocalypse, or 3rd Turn just to name a few other Blue Grass State breweries!

The weather Saturday, Feb. 17, is to be above freezing but the festival is mostly indoors in the hangar and now in a “humongous” tent in front of the hangar.

Tailspin Ale Fest is located at the Louisville Executive Aviation Hangar, 7 miles from Indiana across the I-65 bridge.  Take I-64 E to Cannons Ln in Louisville. Take exit 10, continue on Cannons Ln. south to Sidney Park Drive, then left at Gast Blvd where you find parking!
