We look back at Sun King’s 8 years!

Let’s dial the calendar back 8 years to 2009.   There were a handful of brewpubs open in Indianapolis. Yep. Just 8 years ago!  I often sat in Rock Bottom Downtown where then brewer Jerry Sutherlin, now owner at Round Town Brewery, would have a beer with Dave Colt and Clay Robinson, who both brewed at The Ram downtown and were about to open a new brewery, for beer distribution in Indianapolis.   In 2007-2008 there were many discussions by Dave and Clay about a downtown brewery that would serve at least central Indiana with fresh, local beer to be found on tap locally.   Recall that at that point, 8+ years ago, if local beer was  on tap it was primarily at the local brew pub!  While now there are  11 breweries and brew pubs within a fairly short walk from the Circle Downtown, in 2009 then there were Rock Bottom, The Ram, and Alcatraz (where Granite City is now).  That talk became Sun King in 2009!  They were encouraged by friends, by craft beer lovers, and by so many who had tasted beer they could do, but I think never dreamed of all of the wonderful beer that would come from the brewery on College Avenue.  And who might have thought that what would seem like an out-of-the-way place just north of Washington on College could become a ‘beer haven’ for people of central Indiana.

In an interview at year 5, Dave Colt  told me, “the 3 basics tenets that we founded the brewery on are to make the best beer that we could, to change the way people perceive beer from Indianapolis and part and parcel of that to become the unofficial beer of Indy, and then our goal to give back to the community. All of those things are still in effect!”  Co-founder Clay added, “We have done a pretty good job of remaining true to what we set out to do!”

Sun King is now one of the 3 largest Indiana breweries and the only one of those with all beer sold  in Indiana!   They realized their goals, the community got so many amazing beers and it is still, at this point, Indiana beer for Hoosiers.

The following is edited from an earlier announcement post: Saturday, June 24, was the 8 year anniversary party with  truly special beers, special music, and gathering of the community to that haven on College Avenue!

Just LOOK at the beer list! (only til kegs blow and no growler fills)
